Research and Academic activities of the Department.
  • Daily Reporting: All week days. Attended by the consultant and supervisor of the technical staff. The Blood stock transactions of previous 24 hrs are checked, current blood requests and specific cases needing blood are discussed. Planning of collection of blood and preparation of components is done. Daily account of 18 registers being maintained as per Drugs and Cosmetic act is verified. Blood units screened are taken into stock for issue. ELISA testing for unscreened units is planned for. This activity is done keeping into account the error prevention in blood banking and ensuring availability of safe transfusion for our patients.
  • Technician Classes: (Saturday) 9.30 am: Topics of practical relevance are discussed with the technician so as they know actually the theoretical aspects of the techniques they are performing at the blood bank.
  • Training and Teaching of Doctors / Technicians: The department has been given a chance by reputed Government and non government institutions to train and teach doctors for improving Blood Banking facilities in the city.
  • Nurses Classes: Blood bank officer after formulating the hospital transfusion policy for safe transfusion beyond blood bank laboratory has been involved in creating awareness amongst the staff responsible. In this context nurses classes were organized. 
  • Co ordination of activities of transfusion service with the national AIDS control organization, India.
  • Teaching of DNB students and residents from other departments as well various presentations by the department as part of teaching activities in the institute.
  • The Departmental staff attends training programme and CMEs for updation of knowledge from time to time.

    • Pre-conference National CME on “Recent advances on transfusion medicine”, November, 2007.
    • International workshop on antibody identification at the department, November 2007.
    • Transfusion 2010- National update on Transfusion medicine, 12th June 2010.
    • Facilitator, Training Workshop on implementation of quality management systems in Blood Banks for M.P. and Chhattisgarh, BCSU, 28th Feb to 3rd March 2011.

      • Research Activities

    Objectives:

    • Continuing to develop its vital role in training and workforce planning for both clinical and scientific researchers in Transfusion Medicine.
    • Establishing clinical research networks for better hospital transfusion practice and the outcome of transfusion.

    Proposed Studies

    • Comparative studies of blood safety on NAT versus ELISA screening of blood units.
    • Coagulation studies in bleeding disorders such as Hemophilia.
    • Continuation of molecular studies for thalassaemia.
    • Translation of basic research in transfusion medicine has led to development of novel cellular therapies using well-characterized cell populations isolated from either bone marrow or blood (eg, hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells, Tlymphocytes, dendritic cells).
    • Haemovigilance: data gathering by being a part of national haemovigilance scheme.
    • Hospital based small projects of audits and trials of transfusion thresholds and autologous transfusion strategies Clear endpoints e.g. mortality and health economics are required and Data on blood wastage and financial savings.
    • Voluntary Blood Donation Camps organized by the Department of Transfusion Medicine
