Microbiology

The Department of Microbiology is essentially involved with the diagnosis of infectious diseases as well as the infections complicating any procedure/surgery. The department provides diagnostic support to the hospital and its mini-units by providing microbiological and molecular diagnostic services. Various diagnostic tests for infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites as well as investigations for immunological disorders are carried out in the Department of Microbiology using state-of-the-art technology.

The Department of Microbiology has been recognized as the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for Tuberculosis by the Central TB Division, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The department is facilitated with state-of-the-art diagnostic technologies for detection of drug resistant tuberculosis. The department offers rapid diagnostic services for drug resistant tuberculosis by Cartridge Based Nucleic Acid Test, Line Probe Assay and liquid Culture system. As NRL, the department also carries out various supervisory activities for Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgargh, Jharkhand and Goa states.

The Department of Microbiology also provides services for diagnosis and counseling for HIV infection / AIDS through the Integrated counseling and testing centre (ICTC) through National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), Ministry of Health Govt. of India.

Activities such as surveillance for hospital acquired infections, incorporation of preventive measures to avert any potential outbreak of infection in the hospital, and creation of awareness among staff regarding infection control are carried out on regular basis.

The Department of Microbiology at BMHRC is committed to provide the quality diagnosis for the patients through quality assurance in all aspects of diagnosis.
